Jigra Box Office: Alia Bhatt starrer doesn't do well in Week One
It was a very low first week for Jigra as only Rs. 22 crores* came in. Even if this was the weekend number for the film, it would have been low and here this much has come in the entire first week. Moreover, there was Dusshehra holiday on Saturday and that did help pump up the collections a bit. However, even that wasn’t optimal and when the drop came on Sunday, then the writing was clear on the wall.
A lot has been said and heard about the film’s failure and there will be multiple theories too. However, the fact remains that it was an attempt to mix commercial elements with niche sensibilities that went against it. Either the film could have stayed truly niche and released on OTT, or it could have been out and out commercial and then made way into theatres. Again, not that it would have entered the Rs. 100 Crores Club or something because apart from Alia Bhatt, there was no other pull factor. However, it could at least have got into that respectable Rs. 50 crores zone.
The film will now aim to cross Rs. 30 crores at least and that may be possible since multiplexes have retained a very good count of shows in the second week as well. With no new release this Friday and then the next, this will be the best bet for urban audiences and this is where those associated with the film would be hoping to get that 8-10 crores more.
*Estimates. Final numbers awaited
