The year 2024 was a historic milestone for Malayalam cinema, marking the first time the industry crossed the ₹1,000 crore mark in gross box office collections. This remarkable achievement represented a 116% growth from the previous year and doubled Malayalam cinema’s box office share to 10%. The figures highlighted the growing acceptance and appreciation of Malayalam films not only in India but also on a global scale.

The industry’s growth over the years has been phenomenal. In 2020, Malayalam films grossed ₹147 crore, which rose steadily to ₹191 crore in 2021 and then saw a massive leap to ₹633 crore in 2022. Although there was a slight dip in 2023 with ₹572 crore, 2024 witnessed an unprecedented surge, reaching ₹1,165 crore. This growth was mirrored in audience footfalls, which increased from 2.3 crore in 2020 to 12.6 crore in 2024, a clear indication of the widening reach and appeal of Malayalam films.

One of the standout factors behind this success was the record-breaking performance of Manjummel Boys. The film became the highest-grossing Malayalam movie of all time, earning ₹157 crore and becoming the first Malayalam film to cross the ₹150 crore mark. Its universal themes resonated deeply with audiences in Kerala and neighboring states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, solidifying its place as a game-changer for the industry.

The success of Manjummel Boys was complemented by a broader trend of diverse content offerings. In 2024, 26 Malayalam films crossed the ₹10 crore mark, doubling the count from the previous year. This surge in successful releases showcased the industry’s ability to produce a wide variety of films that appealed to different segments of the audience. Beyond the tentpole productions, the consistent quality and innovative storytelling of Malayalam cinema continued to set it apart.

Another critical driver of growth was the expanding reach of Malayalam films. Titles like Aavesham and Aadujeevitham – The Goat Life broke barriers and found audiences outside traditional markets. These films not only captivated viewers with their compelling narratives but also helped reinforce the reputation of Malayalam cinema as a hub for high-quality storytelling. Their success in newer territories highlighted the industry’s growing influence and its ability to connect with audiences across cultural and linguistic boundaries.

As Malayalam cinema continues to ride this wave of success, the future looks incredibly promising. The momentum generated in 2024 provides a strong foundation for further growth in 2025. By continuing to push boundaries with diverse and high-quality productions, the industry has the potential to further expand its footprint both in India and abroad. The remarkable achievements of 2024 have set the stage for Malayalam cinema to cement its place as a creative and innovative force in the world of cinema.

The highly anticipated Sonu Sood starrer Fateh that has been making headlines for a while now, finally hit screens yesterday. After much hype and promotions, the film has kicked off its theatrical run with an impressive opening day collection of Rs. 2.61 crore. Thanks to a bold move by the actor-producer to price tickets at just Rs. 99 on Day 1, the film has attracted audiences in droves, setting a new benchmark for making cinema more accessible.

Sonu Sood, known for his philanthropic endeavours, introduced this initiative to ensure affordability for viewers and promote inclusivity. Adding another dimension to this gesture, Sood announced that all profits from the film's ticket sales would be donated to charity, turning every ticket purchased into a contribution to a greater cause.

With its reduced ticket pricing, Fateh defied pre-release expectations, as noted by trade analyst Taran Adarsh. In a tweet, he remarked, "Fateh defies pre-release estimations on Day 1... The discounted ticket pricing [₹ 99/-] provided the much-needed boost to its biz. Fateh needs to sustain its momentum and deliver strong numbers over Saturday and Sunday, as ticket prices return to regular rates on these days. While audience feedback is positive, it now needs to translate into increased footfalls.”

The film's initial success has sparked discussions about the potential for affordable pricing strategies to revolutionize the movie-going experience, especially in a post-pandemic world where footfalls have often lagged.

Directed by Vaibhav Mishra, Fateh redefines the action genre with its high-octane sequences, intense storytelling, and socially relevant undertones. The gripping narrative not only entertains but also carries a powerful message, resonating with audiences across demographics.

Produced by Umesh KR Bansal under Zee Studios and Sonali Sood of Shakti Sagar Productions, with Ajay Dhama as co-producer, Fateh boasts a stellar cast. Sonu Sood leads the charge, supported by Jacqueline Fernandez, Naseeruddin Shah, and Vijay Raaz, all delivering compelling performances.

As ticket prices return to regular rates over the weekend, Fateh faces its next big challenge: sustaining momentum and capitalizing on the positive word-of-mouth. With audience feedback leaning favourably, the film has a solid foundation to continue its box office journey.

Beyond its financial success, Fateh stands out as an example of cinema with a cause. Sonu Sood’s initiative has sparked hope for more inclusive and socially conscious filmmaking, setting a precedent for other actors and producers to follow.

2025 has kick started and all eyes are on how this year turns out to be for movies at the box office. 2024 was a mixed year and hence one was waiting for a movie that sets the tone for the year. Game Changer is the first film of the year and as a pan-India affair, it has seen an extensive release in Hindi as well.

Given the kind of advance booking that it was seeing till Thursday, it had seemed like the film would open in Rs. 4-5 crores range at best. However, the film has sprung a pleasant surprise as the first day numbers are far higher than what advance booking may have suggested. The Hindi version has opened at Rs. 8.64 crores and that’s actually a far bigger start than what seemed on the cards. It’s clear that after a fair start in the morning shows, positive word of mouth has caught up for the film and that’s what ensured good momentum post evening shows.

The reports are good for the Ram Charan starrer which means there would be growth today and tomorrow. At the very least, Rs. 30 crores will come for the film and the target would be surpass Devara (Hindi) weekend of Rs. 29.52 crores. The start has been a little better as Devara (Hindi) had opened at Rs. 7.95 crores and now the weekend trending should take it past it.

The Ram Charan-led Game Changer has taken a fair start at the box office in Hindi though the business was aided by self-buyings from the producers. According to early estimates, Game Changer has collected in the range of Rs. 70 crore to Rs 7.50 crores on the first day, opening more or less in the same range as his counterpart, NTR Jr.’s last release, Devara.

The word of mouth seems to be decent and that’s a positive sign for the film to hold well in the mass belts in long run. The first weekend of Game Changer from here-on is expected to be in the range of Rs. 25 to 30 crores, which is a fair result though the fate will be decided by the hold in collections on Monday.

Game Changer released on over 2000 screens in Hindi and has fetched good showcasing all across the board. The ticket prices are also in check, making the film more accessible to the mass audience. The film could have opened better but the trailer and songs were underwhelming and better assets could have pushed first day business around the double digit mark.

It has to be a record of sorts, and something that couldn’t have been imagined either. 12 years after its initial release, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has entered the Rs. 200 Crore Club. Released in 2013, the film had emerged as a blockbuster by netting Rs. 188.57 crores. This was a huge number back then, though the film did miss out on scoring a double century by just a little over Rs. 10 crores.

Well, the wait is over as the film has got its rightful due 12 years down the line. The gap has been covered in the very first week of re-release as the film has gone past the Rs. 12 crores mark already. While the opening weekend was good enough at Rs. 6.25 crores, the days to follow have been impressive as well with around Rs. 1.5 crore each from Monday to Thursday. As a result, Rs. 5.90 crores have come during weekdays as well, which has pushed the first week total to Rs. 12.15 crores.

For all associated with the film, this has been a huge success as now Karan Johar, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone have yet another Rs. 200 Crore Club film to their name while Ayan Mukerji too has scored yet another double century after Brahmastra: Part 1 – Shiva. There is still some ammunition left in the film and that can be seen by the abundance of screens and shows that have been allocated in the second week as well. The film will eventually go past the Rs. 220 crores mark and there is an outside chance of hitting Rs. 225 crores as well.

Hollywood films in India have always enjoyed a loyal fan base, with certain blockbusters leaving an indelible mark on the box office. However, 2024 witnessed a significant decline in their performance. While 2023 recorded an impressive Rs. 950 crore NET, 2024 saw a drop of around 26%, settling at approximately Rs. 700 crore NET. The gross collections further highlight the decline, with 2024 recording Rs. 823 crore, a 27.75% dip from 2023's Rs. 1,139 crore.

In 2023, films like Oppenheimer (Rs. 128.46 crore), Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (Rs. 119.53 crore), and Fast X (Rs. 108.83 crore) dominated the box office, with three releases crossing the Rs. 100 crore mark. Similarly, in 2024, three films – Deadpool & Wolverine, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, and Mufasa: The Lion King – achieved this feat. However, the overall number of mid-tier grossers (films earning between Rs. 40–80 crore) shrank significantly, contributing to the decline in collections.

Top 10 Hollywood Grossers of 2024: Deadpool & Wolverine – Rs. 128.40 crore Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire – Rs. 106.42 crore Mufasa: The Lion King – Rs. 104.90 crore Venom - The Last Dance – Rs. 43.95 crore Kung Fu Panda 4 – Rs. 36.47 crore Dune: Part Two – Rs. 27.86 crore Inside Out 2 – Rs. 27.67 crore Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes – Rs. 27 crore Moana 2 – Rs. 26 crore Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga – Rs. 16.48 crore

Among these, only Deadpool & Wolverine managed to break into the All-Time Top Hollywood Grossers in India, ranking ninth overall.

Veteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh spoke about the low year Hollywood had in India in an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama. He said, “It’s been a strange year not just for Hollywood but also for Bollywood where releases actually dropped. Even the Hindi films were down in 2024, as compared to 2023. There is no particular reason as such. One can only say that there were certain films which came down. There were certain films that one expected them to release. But I am very surprised by the quantity of Hollywood films going down. Maybe last year was an exception where the number didn’t really match with the previous year. But I hope this year turns out to be better in terms of quality, which is no denying, but also quantity.”

The decline in Hollywood’s box office performance in India is not new. Gross collections have steadily decreased over the past three years 2022: Rs. 1,230 crore 2023: Rs. 1,139 crore (down by 7.39%) 2024: Rs. 823 crore (down by 27.75%)

While 2024 faced a steeper drop, analysts believe that the pipeline of highly anticipated films in 2025 could help Hollywood regain lost ground.

As Hollywood studios reassess their strategies for the Indian market, 2024 serves as a pivotal year of learning. By investing in localized marketing, dubbing efforts, and strategically timing releases, the industry can potentially reverse the downward trend this year.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is turning out to be a good success at the box office. The film opened to an encouraging response on Friday and then went on to show good growth over rest of the weekend. Post that, it did very good business on Monday when it collected more than Friday and now the trend has repeated on Tuesday as well.

The film collected Rs. 1.50 crore* more and that’s just amazing for a re-release which was a big success on its release back in 2013 and is now pretty much replicating similar appreciation even today. The screens and shows have been increased for the film with every passing day and for the first time there is a film which has arrived that’s actually challenging the kind of numbers that Pushpa 2: The Rule (Hindi) is bringing in. The Allu Arjun starrer is still the highest collecting film of the day, but that gap is narrowing down, and it would be interesting to see if on Thursday, the Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone starrer actually ends up being the bigger grosser.

So far, the Ayan Mukerji directed film has collected Rs. 9.25 crores* and today it will go past the Rs. 10 crores mark quite comfortably. The film is now set to have a lifetime of at least Rs. 25 crores on its re-release, which means Karan Johar would have another Rs. 200 Crore Club film to his name.

*Estimates. Final numbers awaited

12 years after its original release, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) is creating waves again. The film was the sole release of the first Friday of 2025 and is continuing to grow in stature with every passing day.

After bringing in Rs. 1.15 crore on the opening day, the film continued to grow really well over rest of the weekend. The start itself was pretty impressive as it was the second biggest ever for a re-release, the record being held by last year’s re-release Tumbbad that had netted Rs. 1.65 crore. However, there is a huge difference here and that’s that the horror film had actually released like a new film completely and also arrived on a very good count of screens. On the other hand, the Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone starrer musical romcom saw a very basic re-release on very select screens and shows.

The good part though is that the film has taken very good strides on Saturday and Sunday as both the scenes and shows for the film were increased and moreover the footfalls too kept going up with every passing hour. As a result, the weekend of the Ayan Mukerji directed film has already crossed Rs. 6.25 crores mark and the first week could well end up getting into a double-digit score since the weekdays won’t drop much when compared to the opening day.

The film is a hit all over again and Karan Johar could well be grinning from ear to ear this New Year.

The 2013 cult classic Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (YJHD), starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, returned to cinemas in a special re-release to celebrate its legacy. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, the film opened to a warm reception, collecting Rs. 6.35 crore over its opening weekend.

The film's re-release saw audiences flocking to theatres for a nostalgic trip down memory lane, reliving the chemistry of Bunny (Ranbir Kapoor) and Naina (Deepika Padukone), and the memorable friendships of Avi (Aditya Roy Kapur) and Aditi (Kalki Koechlin).

YJHD collections for its re-release: Friday: Rs. 1.1 cr. Saturday: Rs. 2.25 cr. Sunday: Rs. 3 cr. Total: Rs. 6.35 cr.

On its original release in 2013, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was a box office juggernaut, collecting Rs. 62.11 crore in its opening weekend.

The film's re-release celebrated its enduring popularity as a defining movie of the 2010s, remembered for its themes of friendship, love, self-discovery, and the importance of pursuing one’s dreams. YJHD’s soulful music, picturesque locations, and unforgettable dialogues have made it a timeless classic.

Several factors contributed to its successful re-release, including the film’s iconic status and connection with Millennials and Gen Z, their chemistry that remains one of Bollywood’s most loved on-screen pairings, and of course the re-release was accompanied by fans sharing memories and favourite moments online, creating a wave of nostalgia.

The re-release was met with enthusiasm from fans, many of whom watched the film in theatres for the first time, while others returned to relive cherished memories. A decade after its original release, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani continues to resonate with audiences.

Pushpa 2 (Hindi) has done it. The film has entered the Rs. 800 Crore Club. Though Stree 2 and Jawan had entered the Rs. 600 Crore Club, neither of these even came close to scoring Rs. 700 crores. However, not just Pushpa 2 (Hindi) first invented the 700 Crore Club, it has also raced ahead in very quick time to open even Rs. 800 Crore Club. The feat could well have been accomplished on Thursday but then it fell short by a few crores. Now on its fifth Friday, it has managed to do that.

The Allu Arjun starrer has taken just 30 days to hit Rs. 800 crores and that’s a staggering average of approx. Rs. 27 crores per day. ‘Unbelievable’ is the word for this because the film is currently collecting in single digits and still if after 30 days the average hasn’t gone below Rs. 25 crores mark then it goes on to show that how big were the first 10-15 days for the action drama. In fact today and tomorrow the average will only get better because there will be huge growth seen. Post that even after the collections go down from Monday onwards due to holiday season completely coming to an end and the regular weekdays beginning, the average would still stay on top of the Rs. 25 crores mark.

The Sukumar directed film collected Rs. 3.50 crores* on Friday which pushed the total to Rs. 801.20 crores* and though double digit score won’t come in today, it will push to have that one final go at Rs. 10 crores mark in its spectacular run so far by making it happen on Sunday.

Pushpa 2 – The Rule, starring Allu Arjun, that released on December 5, 2024 has been doing roaring business. After witnessing an immense rate of advance bookings, the business of the film roared on day 1 with staggering collections. Surrounded with immense hype and anticipation, Pushpa 2 has not just dominated the box office but has also rewritten records in its first two weeks of release. The film has crossed a monumental Rs. 632.50 crore mark in just 15 days, making it the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time, surpassing the Rajkummar Rao – Shraddha Kapoor starrer Stree 2, which previously held the record. This achievement is all the more impressive considering that Pushpa 2 is primarily a Telugu film dubbed in Hindi, and it continues to captivate audiences across India and abroad.

Released on a Thursday, Pushpa 2 – The Rule opened to a massive reception, with fans eagerly flocking to theatres to witness Allu Arjun’s return as the iconic Pushpa Raj. The film made an incredible ₹433.50 crore in its first week alone, despite being released during a relatively less favourable time in terms of competition.

The film's debut was nothing short of phenomenal. By the end of its first week (8 days), Pushpa 2 had already grossed Rs. 433.50 crore globally, with a significant contribution from the Hindi belt. The film's Hindi version alone amassed a staggering Rs. 250 crore in the opening week, signalling the growing fanbase of Allu Arjun outside of South India. This number broke several records for a South Indian film in the Hindi market, firmly establishing Allu Arjun as a pan-Indian star.

The film’s gripping narrative, powerful performances, and mass appeal coupled with stellar action sequences drove audiences to theatres, leading to a consistently strong box office performance. With positive word-of-mouth and high demand for repeat viewings, Pushpa 2 not only set a box office benchmark but also generated significant buzz on social media, further propelling its success.

Even after the euphoria of the opening week, Pushpa 2 continued to perform exceptionally well in its second week. The film collected Rs. 199 crore globally in its second week, further consolidating its place in the history of Indian cinema. While the collections saw a slight dip in the second week, this was expected as most films experience a drop after the opening wave. However, given the intense competition from other big-budget releases, the numbers are still a testament to the film's massive appeal.

In just 15 days, Pushpa 2 – The Rule has grossed Rs. 632.50 crore globally, making it the highest-grossing Hindi film of all time. This milestone surpasses Stree 2, which had previously held the record with a lifetime gross of Rs. 600 crore. For a film that is not a traditional Hindi-language production, this is an extraordinary feat.

The film's success is also a reflection of the growing demand for South Indian cinema across the country. The Hindi-speaking audience has increasingly embraced films dubbed from regional languages, and Pushpa 2 is a prime example of how language barriers are being broken down in the Indian film industry.

As Pushpa 2 continues to perform at an impressive pace, the film's overall lifetime collections are expected to rise significantly, with the possibility of crossing the Rs. 700 crore mark in the coming weeks. Its success has already set the stage for a potential third installment, and fans are eagerly awaiting what’s next in the saga of Pushpa Raj.

Pushpa 2 – The Rule Box Office at a glance:

Week 1: Rs.  433.50 cr [8 days; Thursday release]

Week 2: Rs.  199 cr

Total: Rs. 632.50 cr

Released on a Thursday, Pushpa 2:  The Rule (Hindi) completed 4 weeks in theatres yesterday. In the process, it almost touched Rs. 800 crores. The film has been enjoying a phenomenal run ever since release, though yesterday it did see an expected drop since it was the first day post the big holiday season.

That said, there is still some holiday effect coming into play since both Christmas and New Year fell bang in the middle of consecutive weeks, and as a result, despite being a working day, several patrons were enjoying a long week off due to which the collections didn’t come down as much as they would have had this been a regular weekday. This was seen in the numbers that read Rs. 4.7 crores, which is still an excellent number for fourth Thursday.

Today too, there has been no new release with Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani being the only notable film to arrive and that too as a re-release on select screens and shows. The film will bring in some numbers and it would be interesting to see whether the Ranbir Kapoor - Deepika Padukone starrer will collect more or Baby John, which is starting its second week. Meanwhile, Pushpa 2 (Hindi) will keep bringing in moolah today as well and with its current total already standing at Rs. 797.70 crores, it would be aiming to enter Rs. 800 Crore Club today.

Mufasa: The Lion King has emerged as a success story worldwide, and in India, its trending has been quite extraordinary. It had a decent start of Rs. 7.50 crores but since then, it has grown remarkably. On the first day of 2025, January 1, it crossed the Rs. 100 crores mark. And now, some fascinating stats have come forward regarding its performance in the Indian market.

As per the reputed box office website Box Office Mojo, India has emerged as the sixth highest-grossing market for Mufasa: The Lion King after France, United Kingdom, Mexico, Italy and Germany. This also means that it has surpassed China at the global box office. While it has collected $12,288,063 gross in India, the China collections of Mufasa: The Lion King are $11,729,079. This is a significant development since it is common knowledge that China has more number of screens than India.

Several reasons have helped Mufasa: The Lion King achieve this feat in India. The earlier film, The Lion King (2019), had worked big time and it’s a tale, which resonated with people. It’s a film meant for families, who usually come out in full force on holidays. The voiceovers by Shah Rukh Khan in the Hindi version and Mahesh Babu in the Telugu version also enticed moviegoers. But more than that, word of mouth has been positive. Without the public support, the film wouldn’t have managed such a box office trend.

In fact, on December 24, Bollywood Hungama did a story on how Mufasa: The Lion King sold a total of 44,000 tickets in the national chains for Christmas while Pushpa 2 had sold only 27,000 tickets (As of 10:30 am on Tuesday, December 24).

Until January 1, 2025, Mufasa: The Lion King has collected Rs. 104.90 crores nett in India and definitely, has a lot of gas left in the tank. With limited competition until Republic Day, it is expected to cross the Rs. 125 crores mark and can also go higher.

Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha: Filmmaker Neeraj Pandey tried his hand in the romance genre through this Ajay Devgn and Tabu starrer, which released on August 2. The movie not only turned out to be boring but also a one where there were no surprises for the audience. Hence, its box office number remained a disastrous Rs. 8.59 crores.

Baby John: Filmmaker Kalees’ Baby John was a masala movie that saw Varun Dhawan in an actions role for the first time. It also acquired the Christmas release period. But the film didn’t impress the audience as much as the makers would have liked. It was also affected by the tsunami called Pushpa 2: The Rule. All this ensured that it could manage only Rs. 30.18 in its first six days.

Chandu Champion: Kabir Khan’s ambitious tribute to India’s paralympic gold medallist Murlikant Petkar, which saw a dedicated Kartik Aaryan in the titular role, generated good reviews when it released on June 14. However, the film couldn’t attain success at the ticket window because of an overdose of sports movies in recent years and could only earn a lifetime of Rs. 62.95 crores.

Jigra: Vasan Bala’s Alia Bhatt and Vedang Raina starrer, which released on October 11, had an interesting premise. But the film’s niche appeal didn’t entice the masses, and it went onto become a rare unsuccessful film for Alia as it could only manage Rs. 30.69 crores.

Khel Khel Mein: Filmmaker Mudassar Aziz’s Khel Khel Mein, which was a multi-starrer headlined by Akshay Kumar, wasn’t criticized for its content. However, the film was released alongside Stree 2 and Vedaa during the Independence Day weekend. The former became one of the biggest blockbusters, ensuring that Khel Khel Mein managed a mere Rs. 40.36 crores.

Maidaan: Just like Kabir Khan’s Chandu Champion, this Ajay Devgn starrer which released on 11 April was also affected by the overdose of sports dramas or biopics. Despite glowing reviews and Ajay Devgn’s heartfelt performance, it could rake in only Rs. 52.29 crores.

Sarfira: Akshay Kumar is going through a lean patch for a couple of years. Sarfira, which released on July 12, was another addition to his unsuccessful films. Remake of the acclaimed Tamil film Soorarai Pottru, it managed a dismal number of only Rs. 22.13 crores.

Vedaa: This John Abraham and Sharvari starrer received mixed reviews. On top of that, it was also affected by the Stree 2 juggernaut as it was released alongside that film during Independence Day. The end result for this Nikkhil Advani directed film was only Rs. 20.25 crores.

Yodha: Released on March 15, Dharma Productions’ Yodha was promoted as the next big thing in the action genre in Bollywood. However, the Sidharth Malhotra, Raashii Khanna and Disha Patani starrer didn’t click at the box office as it only managed a lifetime number of Rs. 32.45 crores.

  Disaster

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan: This Ali Abbas Zafar directorial, which released on April 11, was an expensive and highly mounted action flick shot in various countries. It also starred two action specialists in the form of Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff. Alas, the film just bombed at the ticket window and turned out to be a major loss-making venture for Pooja Entertainment as it earned only Rs. 59.17 crores.

The re-release trend has been in existence since the pandemic but it became quite significant this year. Rockstar was re-released when theatres were starved of biggies and the experiment worked big time. Laila Majnu soon arrived in cinemas and it did more than 3 times than its original run. Tumbbad, however, took the cake. Its re-release was marketed as if it were a fresh release. The effort paid dividends as Tumbbad collected more than many significant big new releases of 2024 like Merry Christmas, Crakk, Laapataa Ladies, Swatantrya Veer Savarkar, Kill, Auron Mein Kahan Dum Tha, Ulajh, Vedaa, etc.

In this special feature, we’ll take a look at the top re-release grossers of 2024. Tumbbad took the cake with its collections of Rs. 32 crores. The film had an unbelievable run and it’ll be difficult for any re-release to match its earnings in the near future. It’s the only film to collect more than Rs. 10 crores; the next big grosser collected 25% of Tumbbad’s re-release earnings.

Laila Majnu came next followed by Rockstar. The Ranbir Kapoor-starrer started on a slow note and then grew with each passing week. Kal Ho Naa Ho’s re-release took the fourth position and the videos of viewers dancing to ‘Mahi Ve’ added to the curiosity and increased its collections.

Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, like Tumbbad, Rockstar and Laila Majnu, underperformed on its original release and then earned a cult status. The R Madhavan-Dia Mirza collected Rs. 4 crores, which is close to what it earned in 2001 (Rs. 5.52 crores).

Veer-Zaara, too, sprang a surprise when it released around its 20th anniversary and collected Rs. 3.15 crores. Jab We Met is an evergreen re-release film which always manages to bring numbers. It collected Rs. 1 crore and so did Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. Incidentally, the Ranbir Kapoor-Deepika Padukone starrer will re-release yet again on January 3, 2025. Meanwhile, a lot was expected from Karan Arjun but it collected Rs. 1 crore.

The rest of the re-released films this year were Love Aaj Kal, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Tujhe Meri Kasam, Taal, Pardes, Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari, Biwi No 1, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, Chak De! India, Dil To Pagal Hai, Darr, Baazigar, Main Khiladi Tu Anari, Khiladi, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Tamasha, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Gangs Of Wasseypur, Wake Up Sid, Lamhe, Saathiya, Mohabbatein, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. As per information accessed by Bollywood Hungama, these films collectively earned approx. Rs. 2.50 crores.

In other words, the cumulative collection of re-releases in the domestic market is nearly Rs. 65 crores. Although half of the collections came through Tumbbad, it’s still an impressive figure, which makes it clear that 2025 will also see older films coming back to cinemas.

The collections of re-releases in 2024 in the domestic market:

Tumbbad – Rs. 32 crores Laila Majnu – Rs. 8.50 crores Rockstar – Rs. 6 crores Kal Ho Naa Ho – Rs. 5.80 crores Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein – Rs. 4 crores Veer-Zaara – Rs. 3.15 crores Jab We Met – Rs. 1 crore Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani – Rs. 1 crore Karan Arjun – Rs. 1 crore Rest of the films – Rs. 2.50 crores

TOTAL – Rs. 64.95 crores

It was a good Tuesday for Pushpa 2: The Rule (Hindi) as yet again, more than Rs. 5 crores came in. The film hasn’t dropped below this mark even once during its run and that may happen only on Thursday and Friday when the New Year holiday would be through. The film ended up collecting Rs. 6 crores* and that’s on the same lines as Monday collections.

The film has an outside chance of scoring in double digits again due to New Year holiday. In fact, till Saturday it was pretty much certain since Rs. 10.25 crores had come in, and hence collections on January 1 were expected to be on the same lines. However, surprisingly the growth on Sunday was just about okay at Rs. 12.25 crores due to which the phenomenal trending that seemed to be working so very well for the film sort of got impacted.

Still, at the bare minimum Rs. 8 crores more would certainly come in and that will be fantastic as well for 28th day of the film. The fact that we are still taking about such huge numbers goes on to show that the Allu Arjun starrer has been having the kind of dream run that would require a really solid film to emulate in 2025. So far, the film’s collections stand at Rs. 782.25 crores* and one can expect the makers to celebrate hard when the last big milestone for the Hindi version, that of Rs. 800 Crore Club entry, would be achieved.

*Estimates. Final numbers awaited

Pushpa 2:  The Rule (Hindi) is refusing to slow down, and the current holiday season is further helping its cause. Despite Mufasa:  The Lion King in the play and Baby John being the new release, Pushpa 2 (Hindi) is still collecting the highest on practically daily basis. This was the case right through the weekend and now it’s the same right at the beginning of weekdays as well.

The film brought in Rs. 6 crores* and that’s not much of a drop when compared to Friday collections of Rs. 7 crores. Audiences are continuing to watch the film, which is playing at only around half the screens in circulation and still the occupancy is the highest here. In fact, at quite a few centres, it’s collecting almost the sum total of the other films in the running, which pretty much shows how it’s asserting an all-around dominance. Today also the film will stay over Rs. 5 crores mark and then it would be interesting to see whether it can get into that double digit score one last time on Wednesday due to New Year holiday.

The Allu Arjun starrer has now crossed Rs. 775 crores milestone as well and currently stands at Rs. 778.25 crores*. Today it will cross Rs. 780 crores and by Sunday it will achieve an unthinkable milestone of Rs. 800 crores. The film is an all-time mega blockbuster by a distance and will eventually have a lifetime in excess of Rs. 825 crores.

Rs. 800 Core Club - Here comes Pushpa 2: The Rule (Hindi)! This is going to be a landmark week for the Indian film industry as for the first time, Rs. 800 Crore Club would be formed by a film and that too in a single language. Pushpa 2 (Hindi) has been breaking one record after another ever since its release earlier this month, and this milestones-filled journey is not going to end anytime soon.

This was pretty much evidenced in the weekend gone by as well when the film ended up recording a double-digit score on Saturday and then went one up on Sunday with excellent collections. Despite Baby John and Mufasa: The Lion King playing in theatres, it’s Pushpa 2 (Hindi), which is collecting the highest and that too by a margin. There has been no stopping the film as it has been achieving one milestone after another in quick succession and this Sunday was no different.

Even in its fourth weekend, the film has been the first choice of the audiences and that reflected in Sunday collections that reflected an unbelievable Rs. 12.25 crores been scored. The fact that it has done that on its fourth Sunday is something that will go down in the record books. The Allu Arjun starrer has already collected Rs. 769.75 crores at the box office and now around Rs. 30 crores remain for an entry into the Rs. 800 Crore Club. With mid-week holiday of January 1, it’s very much possible that the film will reach there before the fifth weekend comes to a close.

Yet another day, yet another huge milestone for Pushpa 2: The Rule (Hindi). The film has now crossed Rs. 750 crores mark at the box office. It has managed to do that in just 24 days, which goes on to show the kind of quick strides that it has taken in such less time. There are many more milestones that the film is all set to accomplish in due course of time, and that includes establishing the Rs. 800 Crore Club and then also aiming for Rs. 850 crores benchmark.

In fact, after a brief pause for a couple of days (Thursday and Friday), the film is now also back to scoring in double digits. It went past the Rs. 10 crores mark all over again on Saturday, what with Rs. 10.50 crores* more coming in. What’s even more interesting is that this is more than double of what Baby John has scored on the same day, which pretty much goes on to show the kind of complete dominance that the Allu Arjun starrer is enjoying.

The film currently stands at Rs. 768.75 crores* and growth is bound to come by today, which will push the overall numbers closer to Rs. 15 crores mark. Then it would be all about establishing the Rs. 800 Crore Club, something that should happen in weekdays to follow.

An All Time Mega Blockbuster.

After collecting Rs. 9 crores on Thursday and ensuring that the third week collections went past the Rs. 100 crores mark, Pushpa 2: The Rule (Hindi) kickstarted its campaign for the fourth week on a high as well. The film collected Rs. 8 crores* more and that’s simply superb since there have been only a handful of films that have managed to score this much on their first Friday in 2024. The fact that the Sukumar directed film is doing that on its fourth Friday is a testimony to the tight grasp that it has now managed amongst audiences.

What’s all the more impressive is that the film is doing that when there is a new release Baby John in the running, as well as Hollywood’s Mufasa: The Lion King which has found an audience for itself. Still, there has been no stopping the film as it’s playing at a very good count of screens and shows, and is also the highest collecting film amongst all and that too by a distance.

The film has now also reached Rs. 748.25 crores* and as you read this, it has already crossed Rs. 750 crores mark. Today, the Allu Arjun starrer will jump huge and while Rs. 12-13 crores is certainly on the cards, it also has a chance to get into that Rs. 15-16 crores range. Tomorrow it would do that for sure, which means the film is all set to cross Rs. 775 crores by the time the weekend is through.

*Estimates. Final numbers awaited
