Bhumi Pednekar: Indian cinema has few films that empower woman to be leaders of change

Actor Bhumi Pednekar recently starred in the riveting, socio-political drama BhakshakIn the Netflix film, Bhumi plays a journalist who is hell-bent on bringing the culprits behind a heinous crime to justice.

Talking about her character, Bhumi said that she was happy stepping into the shoes of a woman who is the “agent of change.” “That is rare in Indian cinema as very few films empower a woman to be leaders of change, to be the ones who better society,” she said. “I have always believed in playing women who are powerful, who contribute to nation building and who empower fellow women to stand up against injustice, patriarchy and are vocal about their rights and needs.”

The actor also thanked the film’s director Pulkit, writer Jyotsana Nath and the production house Red Chillies Entertainment for giving her the opportunity. “Bhakshak is a project that has allowed me to act from my heart,” she said.

Bhakshak is produced by Gauri Khan and Gaurav Verma under Red Chillies Entertainment. Shot by Kumar Saurabh and edited by Zubin Sheikh, the film was released on Netflix on February 9.
