Waheeda Rehman to be given Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award

Veteran actor Waheeda Rehman will be presented with the Dadasaheb Phalke Lifetime Achievement Award this year. The Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur, made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday. Notably, this is Rehman’s frequent collaborator Dev Anand’s 100th birth year.

Penning a long note on Rehman’s contribution to Indian cinema, the minister wrote, “Waheeda ji has been critically acclaimed for her roles in Hindi films, prominent among them, Pyaasa, Kaagaz ke Phool, Chaudhavi Ka Chand, Saheb Biwi Aur Ghulam, Guide, Khamoshi and several others.”

“In her career spanning over 5 decades, she has essayed her roles with extreme finesse, leading to a National Film Award for her role as a clanswoman in the film Reshma and Shera,” he added.

Rehman made her acting debut in 1955 in the Telugu film industry. She appeared in films like Rojulu Maraayi and Jayasimha. She is known to have collaborated frequently with Dev Anand. They worked together on films such as C.I.D. (1956), Solva Saal (1958), Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962) and Guide (1965). She also worked closely with Guru Dutt and starred with him in films like, Pyaasa (1957), 12 O’Clock (1958), Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959), Chaudhvin Ka Chand (1960) and Saheb Bibi Aur Ghulam (1962).
