Nitasha Kaul is an Indian origin writer, poet, and activist who was invited by the Karnataka government to speak at a conference on ‘The Constitution and Unity of India’ in Bengaluru on February 24 and 25, 2024. However, she was denied entry to India by the immigration officials at the Bengaluru International Airport on February 23, 2024. She was detained for nearly 24 hours in a holding cell and then deported to London. She claimed that she was refused entry because of her criticism of the RSS, a far-right Hindu nationalist organization, and her views on Kashmir. She also alleged that she was harassed and denied basic facilities during her detention. She said that she had a valid UK passport and an OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) card, and that she received no notice or explanation from the central government for their decision.

Nitasha Kaul is a professor at the University of Westminster and a vocal advocate for democracy, human rights, and gender equality. She has written several books and articles on Kashmir, India, and global politics. She was one of the key witnesses at a US House Committee on Foreign Affairs hearing on the human rights situation in Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370 by the Indian government in 2019.
